The Markham Mariners play in the York-Simcoe Baseball Association (YSBA) loop within the Ontario Baseball Association (OBA). Teams play between, on average, 18 to 24 regular season games in an interlocking schedule with teams from cities and towns such as Aurora, Barrie, Bolton, Bradford, Newmarket, Orangeville, Orillia, Richmond Hill, Thornhill, and Vaughan. Many of our teams also play an interlock schedule with Toronto Baseball Association (TBA) teams.
In recent years, the Mariners have distinguished themselves at the provincial and national levels. In 2005, the Major Bantam team won the Baseball Ontario Provincials at the AAA level and the Baseball Canada Nationals. In the same year, the Mariners Rookie Ball team won the Baseball Ontario Provincials.
Tryouts: A requirement for a player to make a Rep team. Successful players, to be a part of a competitive team, will have a combination of superior baseball skills, team spirit, dedication, and a positive attitude.
Commitment: The official OBA Rep season begins in early May with regular season games held in different York-Simcoe municipalities. Most Rep teams in Markham also hold Winter Training sessions in different schools around the Town of Markham. These typically begin in early January, but some start as early as November. Once the season begins, Rep players are required to attend Rep practices and games that are usually held during the week, Monday through Thursday. Additionally many Rep teams participate in weekend tournaments throughout the summer months. If a team is to be competitive against other areas, this requires a serious commitment from all the players and coaches.
Cost: Players who successfully tryout and are chosen to join a Rep team are required to pay two surcharges, one to the MDBA for the additional cost associated with uniforms, fields, umpire fees, and other related fees; and another to the team itself for equipment, tournaments, and other expenses. All of these fees are in addition to regular House League fees. Depending on level, team needs, and sponsorship support, a player can expect to pay between $600 to $1500 to participate on a Rep team.
